Agronomy Update – Feb 15

Hi everyone,

Firstly, thanks to everyone that came out to the PEI Potato Conference on Monday.  The room was full and initial feedback on the quality of the topics and speakers has been positive.  If you attended and want to share your feedback, please take our quick survey.

I am planning to share the majority of the slide decks from the presentations on the PEI Potato Agronomy site under Seminars/Workshop Presentations.  I will update you when those are all uploaded.  As well, I am planning to share the audio from some of the presentations as podcast episodes on Spudchat in the near future, so watch for that as well.

AIM Local Workshops Next Week:

I know that some of you are headed away over the next two weeks, taking advantage of the Canada Games school break.  However, I had the opportunity to bring in Dr. Mario Tenuta for a return visit to the Island so I’ve got some local workshops planned for next week.  Mario will be sharing results from the Canadian Potato Early Dying Network (CanPEDNet) project that is wrapping up, as well as some research he’s been doing on the use of enhanced efficiency nitrogen fertilizers.

I’ve also invited Dr. Aitazaz Farooque from UPEI to share some of the work that he and his team have been doing for AIM in the last couple of years on soil compaction, including use of soil EC sensors to detect compaction.  I will then also briefly share results of a few AIM projects on soil health from last year.  All potato growers and AIM partners are welcome to attend!

Dates and Times:

Thursday, Feb 23rd:  9 am at Emerald Community Centre

Thursday, Feb 23rd:  1:30 pm at Fox Island Seed Farm (upstairs meeting room)

Nitrogen Management:

Last month, the Federation of Agriculture organized some workshops on the topic of nitrogen management, including Dr. David Burton from Dal AC as well as some other local speakers.  A video of the virtual workshop held via Zoom is now available for anyone to watch, in case you missed those workshops or you wanted to revisit the content.
