Hi everyone. I few quick updates before the weekend:
Spore Trapping Update:
- No late blight spores in PEI or NB. Maine continues to find late blight spores but not reports of infection yet.
- Early blight spores were found in large numbers at two sites in Prince County but largely absent everywhere else. It was a similar trend for brown spot. Grey mold numbers are quite low at the moment.

Aphid Alert Update:
- Aphid numbers remain high, averaging over 4 aphids per trap. Numbers are higher in the western half of the Island than in the eastern half.
- No green peach aphids were detected this week. The majority of aphids detected are non-colonizing aphids
- Seed growers should remain vigilant with an aggressive mineral oil application program.

Additional Pest/Disease Updates:
- I had reports of European corn borer (ECB) in Kings Co. this week (moths and egg masses). Growers/scouts should remain vigilant on scouting for egg masses.
- For growers applying protective fungicides for early blight/brown spot/black dot: don’t use the same fungicides or products from the same groups back-to-back. Alternate chemistries to maximize control and minimize resistance.
- While we aren’t seeing much Alternaria pressure so far, brown spot (Alternaria alternata) is more prevalent than early blight (Alternaria solani) in PEI. Therefore, ensure you are using a fungicide labelled for brown spot control. Here is a short list of products listed for brown spot and early blight control (this may not include every product registered):
- Luna Tranquility (Group 7 & 9)
- Miravis Duo (Group 3 and 7)
- Cevya (Group 3)
- Quadris Top (Group 3 & 11)
- Veltyma (Group 3 and 11)
- Aprovia Top (Group 3 and 7)
