Agronomy Update – March 3rd

Hi everyone,

It was great to see many of you at the Potato Expo last week. Feedback on the conference presentations was very positive, and attendance was large. A big thank you to Rodrigo dos Santos with the PEI Dept of Ag for working with me to make the Expo Conference a reality this year.

For those that may have missed some of the Expo presentations, videos are now available on the Agronomy Site under Seminar/Workshop Presentations.

AIM Winter Workshops – March 10/11 – Dr. Mark Stalham, UK

I’m very pleased to share that Dr. Mark Stalham from the UK is coming to PEI next week on March 10th and 11th for our AIM Winter Workshop series.  Mark previously worked as a researcher with NIAB and Cambridge University Farm, before “retiring” into private agronomy consultancy.  He is well-renowned as a potato researcher and agronomist, particularly in the areas of tillage and irrigation.

I have asked Mark to cover a few topics, including irrigation scheduling and bruise reduction, saving lots of time for questions.

Dates and Locations:

Tuesday, March 10th  – 9:00 am                Emerald Community Centre, Emerald
Tuesday, March 10th  – 1:30 pm                Elite Seed Farm, Fox Island
Wednesday, March 11th  – 9:00 am         Riverhouse Inn, Montague

Looking forward to seeing lots of growers and AIM industry partners at these workshops!

Spudchat is Back!

After an extended hiatus, my potato agronomy podcast Spudchat is back with new episodes!  You can listen to episodes here or wherever you normally download/listen to podcasts.

The first episode of this season is with Dr. Julie Pasche of NDSU, and we talk about Alternaria diseases (early blight and brown spot), including results of some survey work we did in PEI looking at the diversity of Alternaria species as well as potential fungicide resistance.

Tomorrow, another new episode will drop, this time with Dr. Judith Nyiraneza of AAFC Charlottetown returning to talk about manure and other soil amendments and their value to the soil.  I hope to have new episodes every Wednesday for the next month or two.
